Our second trip
into Botswana took us 147 kilometres to Kazungula, just outside the Chobe
National Park, although we had to drive through the game reserve to get to
our accommodation. On our way we passed dozens of huge Baobab trees, as
well as quite a few animals.
We stayed at Toro
Lodge on the banks of the Chobe River and went on an early morning game
drive into the reserve and a late afternoon game drive, on the river in
the game reserve. Both excursions brought great sightings.
In the morning we
saw a lot of game, including a pride of six Lions, several Elephants, some
Puku, a Roan, a few Hippos and a handful of Banded Mongeese. In the
afternoon, again we saw lots of game as well as being surrounded by
Elephants in every direction as far as we could see. We also saw a couple
of huge Crocodiles, some more Puku, dozens of Hippos, a massive herd of
Buffalos and a large number of Red Lechwe.
After a couple of
nights at Chobe we had the longest drive of our African adventure so far!
A massive 824 kilometres later we arrived at Tuli, a game reserve on the
border of Botswana and South Africa.
The two game
drives were worth it though. As well as the usual game, we saw a couple
of Bat-Eared Foxes, several Black-Backed Jackals, a Rock Elephant Shrew,
several Elands, Klipspringers, a couple of magnificent Black Eagles, a
Hyena high up in a rocky outcrop with her pups as well as a huge breeding
herd of Elephants. The Elephants also visited for the entire night at our
camp! Although they weren't as noisy as the little Swiss Miss who kept us
awake deep into the night shouting, something she also enjoyed doing on
the game drives, without her father or her father's South African
girlfriend batting an eyelid! |
